Why is life so hard?

Why does everything in life have to be so hard? Shouldn't answers to problems come easier? Why does the Lord stay his hand for so long? Why are some things so easy for some people and so hard for others? Can the reward really be worth all the anguish we go through in this life? I hope so.

We just listened to talks this last Sunday from the family that lost 4 loved ones (father, husband and 2 children) in the last year and a half. It was amazing to hear their perspective on those same questions. Both women (mother and daugther now widows) were saying how much stronger they are now. They would take their family back in a second, but they would never trade the lessons they have learned, the strength they have gained, the people they are now, and their much closer relationships with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.

Is everything okay with you, Jamon?

I believe the Lord stays his hand because we develop into spiritually mature beings who are, in a literal sense, an extension of His hand. He trusts us to exercise our agency to make the best choices, and will sustain those choices.

Rather than viewing the circumstance as the Lord staying his hand, perhaps you might re-frame and view the situation as the Lord entrusting you with opportunity to make the same good decision he would.

Oh, and I'm certain the reward is definitely worth it. :)

We all know the "book answers" to those questions. We all know the attitude we should have in those hard times, and that, yes, they make us stronger. But, sometimes we think why us? Why now? Why this?

I do know that continued scripture study, prayer, and Temple attendance is the only way to get through and find the personal answers.

It is interesting that you put that picture of Joseph Smith with your entry.
I am reading a book right now called "Emma and Joseph" and it is a historical detailed account of their life and church history. The author is actually a descendant of Joseph Smith III, and is the first member of the church from that line. (remember his line went rlds)
Anyway, it is amazing to read about the trials that he and Emma went through, and a lot of the early church members.
In hard times I am always reminded of the scripture when the Lord told Joseph Smith "your afflictions shall be but a small moment...and if thou endure it well I shall exalt thee on high." (I am going off memory, I hope i didn't misquote it too bad)
Anyway, our life is short in perspective of eternity and we just have to do our best and let him help lift is in the hard times. Sorry this is so long. We love you Jamon!

Life is so unpredictable. The one thing that gets me through every day is believing that God knows each and every one of us personally. He blesses us in so many little ways. Over time I have seen many things (not all things) that I thought were terrible actually have a better outcome, but it took time, sometimes years. Sometimes that better outcome was learning a valuable lesson I wouldn’t have otherwise learned. And while I know that Heavenly Father has a plan for each of us I don’t know all that is entailed in that plan and probably never will. But I know he is watching over you.
